Data Fabric is responsible for designing and developing enterprise-grade solutions that support Data Virtualisation.It’s services are highly sought after across the firm, often collaborating with other departments, management, and the executive. NUMBER OF DIRECT REPORTSTwoMAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE The Lead Data Virtualisation Engineer in MUFG will lead the design, deployment, and adoption of the Starburst data analytics platform for the organization’s first implementation. This role requires deep technical experience in distributed SQL engines, data lakes, along with the ability to guide stakeholders through platform onboarding and production readiness.Creation of unified, real-time views of data from multiple sources - connecting to underlying systems to enable both agentic AI and users to access and integrate data as needed for analytics, reporting, and business intelligence.This implementation includes a significant research and development component, with close collaboration alongside the vendor to refine and evolve the product in line with emerging needs and capabilities.KEY RESPONSIBILITIESLead end-to-end implementation of Starburst (Trino-based) platform from initial setup through production rolloutServe as the Starburst subject matter expert, providing guidance and technical leadershipDesign and implement scalable query architecture across data lakes, warehouses, and enterprise data sourcesDeploy and configure Starburst Enterprise, including Trino cluster setup and tuningIntegrate multiple data sources i.e. Snowflake, databases, etc.Implement security, authentication, and authorization aligned with enterprise standardsOptimize query performance, concurrency, and resource utilizationEstablish monitoring, alerting, and operational best practicesCollaborate with cloud and platform teams to ensure high availability, scalability, and reliabilityPrepare relevant documentationSpeed up adoption of AIImprove data governanceImprove time-to-market of data productsWORK EXPERIENCEEssential:10+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics platforms, or distributed systemsHands-on experience with Starburst, Trino, or PrestoStrong background in cloud engineering (AWS/Azure/GCP) and KubernetesProficiency in SQL, data lakes, object storage, and distributed query optimisationGood understanding of data security, governance, and access controlsPreferred:Prior experience leading first-time platform implementationsExperience migrating to StarburstFamiliarity with BI, data engineering, enterprise analytics use cases (Power BI, dbt, Python, Spark)Strong communication and stakeholder management skillsSKILLS AND EXPERIENCEFunctional / Technical Competencies:Essential:Technical leadership and ownershipArchitecture and problem-solving mindsetAbility to work independently in ambiguous environmentsStrong documentation and knowledge-sharing skillsStrong understanding of AI fundamentals, Large Language Models (LLMs), and agentic AI architectures, with the ability to leverage modern data platforms, governance, and data products to enable successful AI outcomes.Education / Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experienceCloud certifications (Azure/AWS/GCP).PERSONAL REQUIREMENTSExcellent communication skillsResults driven, with a strong sense of accountabilityA proactive, motivated approach.The ability to operate with urgency and prioritise work accordinglyStrong decision-making skills, the ability to demonstrate sound judgementA structured and logical approach to workStrong problem-solving skillsA creative and innovative approach to workExcellent interpersonal skillsThe ability to manage large workloads and tight deadlinesExcellent attention to detail and accuracyA calm approach, with the ability to perform well in a pressurised environmentStrong numerical skillsWe are open to considering flexible working requests in line with organisational requirements.MUFG is committed to embracing diversity and building an inclusive culture where all employees are valued, respected and their opinions count.
