A growing digital consultancy delivering complex, high-impact services into the public sector is looking for a Senior Java Developer to join its engineering capability.

This is an opportunity to work on meaningful projects, contributing to the development of scalable, secure software solutions while influencing engineering best practice across multidisciplinary teams.

Please note: Due to the nature of the work, candidates must either hold current SC Clearance or be eligible to obtain SC Clearance.

The Role

As a Senior Java Developer, you will play a key role in the design, development, and deployment of modern digital services. You will work on complex systems, contribute to architectural decisions, and support the wider engineering team through mentorship and technical leadership.

You'll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including product, design, DevOps, and QA to deliver high-quality solutions aligned to user and business needs.

Key Responsibilities



Development & Engineering

• Design, build, and maintain robust, scalable, and secure software solutions
• Develop modern applications using Java, Spring Boot, and microservices architectures
• Contribute to architectural decisions and ensure alignment with overall system design
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues

Quality & Best Practice

• Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code
• Implement and improve CI/CD pipelines to improve delivery efficiency
• Conduct code reviews and promote high standards of software quality
• Ensure strong test coverage and adherence to secure-by-design principles

Collaboration & Delivery

• Work within agile delivery teams across the full software lifecycle
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to meet delivery goals
• Contribute to technical discussions early in the project lifecycle
• Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Leadership & Mentorship

• Mentor and support junior engineers, helping to develop capability within the team
• Champion best practices in software development and continuous improvement
• Contribute to enhancing engineering standards, tooling, and processes

Continuous Improvement

• Stay up to date with emerging technologies and industry trends
• Identify opportunities to improve systems, processes, and tooling
• Support adoption of modern engineering practices and approaches

About You



Essential Experience

• Strong experience across the full software development lifecycle
• Significant hands-on experience with Java, Spring Boot, and microservices
• Experience working in agile environments with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines
• Knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP
• Familiarity with containerisation technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) or serverless architectures
• Experience with automated testing frameworks and modern development practices
• Understanding of software architecture patterns and secure design principles
• Strong communication skills with the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders

Desirable

• Experience operating at a senior level within engineering teams
• Exposure to consulting or client-facing environments
• Experience delivering within government or public sector settings
• Proficiency across additional programming languages
