<p><strong>Senior / Principal Mechanical Design Engineer</strong></p><p>Contract: Permanent</p><p>Hours: Full Time</p><p>Salary: Very Competitive</p><p>Location: Birmingham City Centre</p><p>Start Date: Immediate / ASAP</p><p><br><br>If the following job requirements and experience match your skills, please ensure you apply promptly.<br></p><p><strong>Role Overview</strong></p><p>This is a senior-level appointment within a building services design environment, operating at Senior or Principal Engineer level depending on experience. The role focuses on leading the delivery of mechanical building services design across a diverse project portfolio, with a strong emphasis on low-carbon, energy-efficient and regulation-compliant solutions.</p><p>You will take ownership of complex design work from early concept through to construction, providing technical leadership to project teams and supporting clients in achieving net zero and decarbonisation targets.</p><p><br></p><p><strong>Key Responsibilities</strong></p><ul><li>Lead and deliver mechanical building services design across commercial, industrial, healthcare, residential, retail, care and mixed-use developments</li><li>Take responsibility for design delivery from concept through detailed design to construction stages across RIBA work stages</li><li>Produce and oversee coordinated design outputs including drawings, specifications, schedules and technical reports using CAD/BIM workflows and internal design resources</li><li>Undertake and review mechanical engineering calculations and system analysis to ensure safe, compliant, efficient and cost-effective designs</li><li>Lead integration of low and zero carbon technologies and energy-efficient strategies into building services solutions</li><li>Act as a key point of contact for clients, architects, contractors and wider design teams, presenting design solutions and resolving complex technical issues</li><li>Provide technical leadership and design oversight within multidisciplinary project teams</li><li>Manage your own workload and support wider team delivery across multiple concurrent projects</li><li>Mentor and support the development of junior and intermediate engineers and technicians</li><li>Maintain strong awareness of UK Building Regulations, British Standards, CIBSE guidance and wider industry best practice</li></ul><p><br></p><p><strong>Key Skills & Qualifications</strong></p><ul><li>Degree or equivalent qualification in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline</li><li>Significant experience in mechanical building services design within a consultancy or design-led environment</li><li>Strong technical understanding of HVAC systems including heating, cooling, ventilation and associated plant systems</li><li>Proven experience delivering projects through multiple design stages and across varied building sectors</li><li>Competent use of mechanical design, calculation and modelling software</li><li>Experience working within BIM/CAD coordinated design environments</li><li>Experience with building performance / thermal modelling tools (e.g. IES or equivalent)</li><li>Strong client-facing communication skills with ability to explain complex technical solutions clearly</li><li>Strong leadership, organisational and project delivery skills</li><li>Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively</li><li>Strong commitment to sustainable design and improving building energy performance</li><li>Full UK driving licence</li></ul><p><br></p><p><strong>Desirable</strong></p><ul><li>Chartered Engineer status or working towards Chartership (CIBSE, xwzovoh IMechE or equivalent)</li><li>CIBSE Low Carbon Consultant (LCC) or Low Carbon Energy Assessor (LCEA) accreditation</li><li>Experience with healthcare technical standards (HTMs), including compliance, witnessing and derogation processes</li><li>Knowledge of renewable and low-carbon energy systems integration</li><li>Experience mentoring, supervising or managing junior engineers</li><li>Interest in digital engineering tools and emerging design technologies</li></ul><p><br></p><p><strong>Benefits</strong></p><ul><li>Competitive salary</li><li>Hybrid and flexible working arrangements</li><li>Contributory pension scheme</li><li>Generous holiday allowance, including Christmas office closure (not deducted from leave)</li><li>Professional development and study support</li><li>Early finish Fridays</li><li>Death in service benefit</li><li>Employee assistance programme</li><li>Paid volunteering days</li><li>Clear progression pathways</li><li>Cycle to work scheme</li><li>Electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme</li></ul><p><br></p><p><strong>Interested?</strong></p><p>If you're interested in this opportunity, please contact Conner Richards at RGB Recruitment – </p>
